Concept of TUM's own China Expertise Programme
The development of China expertise programmes has become increasingly important in recent years. The term "China expertise" refers to the specialised knowledge, skills and understanding required to successfully navigate and operate in Chinese contexts. It includes the understanding and ability to deal effectively with the Chinese language, history, culture, politics, society and economy. It is a combination of intercultural competence, intercultural sensitivity and specific knowledge about China.
At the Technical University of Munich (TUM), students have the opportunity to concentrate on China intensively as part of the China Expertise Programme and to develop a certain level of comptence - alongside their studies. The programme offers students the chance to improve their language skills, gain intercultural sensitivity and acquire basic knowledge in the fields of economics, politics, modern history and society.
Successful completion of the programme requires achievements in the following three areas of expertise: Language, Culture, International Experience
Language - Competence in everyday speech and communication on the Internet
- Chinese language courses (3 ECTS each): The TUM Language Centre offers Chinese language courses from level A1 to B2, including "Communication at Work" (A2), "Business Chinese" (B2), "Scientific Chinese" (B2) and Cantonese (A1).
Language skills acquired elsewhere can be recognised. - China Digital (1 ECTS): The module is a self-study Moodle course. Students learn how to use Chinese apps, how to navigate the Chinese internet and monitor their progress independently.
Culture - Intercultural competence, intercultural sensitivity and specific knowledge about China
- Course participation in "Regional studies and intercultural training" (3 ECTS)
- Seminars/webinars on current cultural topics:
- Global Minds (TUM Language Centre & TUM Global)
- Chinaforum Bavaria
- Further seminars/webinars from external partners
Participants will either receive a corresponding confirmation of participation in the live seminars/webinars or write a short essay (500 words) if they missed a live webinar and watched the recording instead.
International Experience - Connect with valuable contacts and practice in the country of destination
- Certificate level Bronze or Silver: Participation in TUMtandem, Tsinghua-TUMtandem, Taiwan Tech-TUMtandem or similar programmes
- Certificate level Silver: Summer school at Tsinghua University or other partner universities
- Certificate level Gold: Stay abroad: Semester or internship abroad (at least 12 weeks)
The certificate can be obtained at three different levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold. The levels differ in their requirements and their scope. Thus, students can also obtain a certificate within a relatively short Master's programme.
Language requirements of the certificate levels:
- Bronze: Achievement of HSK 1 level (corresponds to TUM language courses up to and including A1.2). After completing this level, participants are able to take part in simple everyday conversations and conduct short text message conversations in Mandarin Chinese.
- Silver: Achievement of HSK 2 level (equivalent to TUM language courses up to and including A2.2). After participation, students are able to formulate their opinions in a longer, thoughtful and finely structured form.
- Gold: Reaching the level of HSK 3 (corresponds to TUM language courses up to and including B1.1). Students can use complex sentence structures and make the right choice of words. They are able to talk about specific topics.
Language skills acquired elsewhere can be recognised.
The application is for a specific certificate level from which you can upgrade to a higher level at any time.
Participants in the programme benefit from guaranteed places in courses and tandem programmes as well as reimbursement of webinar fees.
ECTS already awarded in language courses, participation in a tandem programme or an exchange semester can be credited immediately upon registration to enable faster achievement of the desired qualification. Students without a place on the programme can also collect ECTS credits in language courses, which will be awarded if they successfully reapply the following year.
Early entry enables students to fulfil all requirements in good time and acquire important expertise about China before graduation.
