What happens, when you leave your normal surroundings behind and ventures out into a new and different world? How do you learn to adjust? Good intercultural communication skills are a prerequisite for professional success in our global world today. In order for you to make the most out of your international exchange, TUM offers you this intercultural training course, with the goal of enhancing this important skill set. Throughout interactive self-awareness exercises, role plays and phases for reflection, you will experience yourself as a culture bound individual. You will anticipate what „Culture Blues“ might feel like and learn techniques to analyse interculturally challenging situations competently and effectively, while developing functional communicative strategies.

Content:

How do the traditions of teaching and learning in an academic environment differ from one culture to another? Which conventions exist regarding the communication between professors, lecturers and students during, before and after lectures? These and many other questions surrounding studying at a German university will be covered from an intercultural perspective in this half day seminar (5hrs). The seminar serves to deepen your knowledge about Germany and the Germans and also reflect on ways in which you may encounter intercultural differences in university life. You will also enhance your understanding for interculturally challenging communicative situations with professors, fellow students and advisors and become acquainted with tools to deal with “culture blues” or “culture shock”.

Future engineers are required to coordinate interdisciplinary projects and collaborate with specialists from other domains. Aside from professional know how, successful engineering in a European context requires excellent intercultural communication skills and competences. But what exactly are the ingredients for successful cooperation in multicultural settings? The workshops of the EuroTeQ Engineering University focus on the intercultural agility that is crucial for studying and working in a multicultural environment.

In this seminar, we contemplate, among other things, the phenomenon of “reverse culture shock”. We apply intercultural theory and techniques to analyze and understand any experiences that may still be on your mind from your exchange experience. To prepare for your future as a “Global Citizen”, we develop strategies for successful intercultural cooperation in international projects and teams. Together, we will contemplate our cultural identity at the interface with the “other”. What are the next required steps on our way to intercultural competence? Where are we in our adaptation process and is there a risk of overadaptation?

Content:

After completion of this course, students can communicate more effectively with partners from other cultures. Specifically, they can recognize cultural differences when they occur, understand some specific ways in which cultures can differ, and have developed self-awareness of their own cultural behaviors and values, which helps them be more effective in cross-cultural communication situations. After completion of this course, non-native speakers of English can better understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning; they can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions; they can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes and they can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices; They are better prepared for studying or working abroad. Corresponds to C1 of the CER.

Zielgruppe: future engineers, especially participants in the certificate program "German for Engineers"

Inhalt:

The knowledge in intercultural communication developed in this course enables students in engineering subjects to communicate interculturally in multinational project teams and in the German working context. Students develop the application of intercultural models to analyze complex, interculturally challenging situations in the professional environment. Furthermore, they acquire factual knowledge about the specifics of the German labor market, such as social partnership, company co-determination, content and structure of an employment contract, company structures, etc.. In addition, they will acquire the corresponding business German vocabulary.

Content:

Intercultural competence is an essential skill for successfully working in an international environment. Actively reflecting one’s own cultural identity plays an important part in developing cultural awareness. In order to gain most from your exchange program and to be able to integrate your intercultural experiences profitably into your daily work, TUM Language Center offers this half-day intercultural training course in cooperation with the International Center.
