The Self-Study Centers at the TUM

The self-study centers at the Garching and Weihenstephan campuses of the university offer you the opportunity to study a foreign language of your choice at your own pace. This is the ideal solution for those students wishing to learn a new language or refresh their knowledge of a specific language, especially for those who have little spare time to attend regular foreign language courses during the semester.

The following languages are available: German as a Foreign Language, Dutch, Chinese, English (also TOEFL practice materials), French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Swedish and Spanish.
All levels are represented: beginners, elementary, intermediate and even advanced in the more common European languages. Grammar, pronunciation practice and more intensive learning programs to refresh your language knowledge are also on offer.

After at least 10 hours of self-study of the language of your choice you can ask for a "language certificate" as proof of your learning efforts. This certificate may guarantee you a place on one of the more popular language courses at the Modern Languages Center of the university the following semester. With this certificate come to the office of Language Center to fix your place.
